MUSIC COPYING AND ENGRAVING

Receive publishing-quality PDFs of scores and parts from your manuscript.

Classical music of any style or period is my specialty.

I can create custom graphics, fonts, logos — anything required to set your music.

Located in New York City, but the work can be done remotely via e-mail (by scanning your music) or post.

I work in both MakeMusic Finale and Avid Sibelius, depending on the project, and in Adobe Illustrator and/or Photoshop for graphics.

RATES

For most music the rate is $35/hour.

Since music complexity can vary widely, I can only give an estimate after viewing the score. If that is not possible, I will try to provide a rough estimate if you send me a few scanned pages that are representative of the piece.

A flat fee can also be negotiated.

Referral discount: I will give you a 10% discount on our next job if your referral results in a new client.

Student discount is available.

HOW IT WORKS

After digitally typesetting your score, I will e-mail you a draft copy in PDF format for proofreading, along with any questions I had while reading the music.

When I'm finished with your piece, I will e-mail you (or provide a CD with) the final PDFs and a computer-generated audio rendition, if desired. I can have the music printed for you (cost will be additional), or you can bring the PDFs to a print shop or chain (such as Kinko's or Staples) for printing and binding.

Here is a checklist of things you should do which will make the job go more smoothly and quickly:

Privacy Policy: Your music is owned by you, and I will never distribute it or any other files associated with it, including audio files, to any third party without your consent. I do keep copies of manuscripts as well as the digital files for at least a year, unless you request shorter or longer filing, in case you need to make revisions to your work.

ABOUT THE ENGRAVER

Richard Caldwell has been digitally typesetting music for over 15 years. He has had a broad music education and experience. Originally concentrating in performance, he studied and performed clarinet and piano from his early years through his studies at Brandeis University and has dabbled in a number of other instruments, including alto saxophone, baritone saxophone, oboe, harpsichord, organ, violin, and voice. Firsthand knowledge — in addition to extensive experience performing chamber music and studies of orchestration — has provided him a familiarity of all standard instruments.

After graduating from Brandeis, Richard moved to New York City and studied music composition and theory at New York University where he received his master's degree. While inputting his own music into early versions of Finale, he was asked to typeset other students' works, which eventually led to a freelance career in music engraving.

Richard is also a graphic designer, working in collateral and editorial design, information design, brand identity, presentation development, and Flash animation. This, along with his understanding of typography and fonts, allows him the ability to create custom graphics, logos, symbols, and fonts for music scores.

In addition to expertise in MakeMusic Finale and Avid Sibelius, he works in the entire Adobe Creative Suite — especially Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop — as well as Microsoft PowerPoint and Apple Keynote.
